Outreach and Extension activity at Thota Bengre

Besant Women’s College organised the Community Service and SocialResponsibility programme by the Extension and Outreach Activity Cell underthe banner ‘Swaccha Mangaluru (Bengre Region) Swacchatha AndolanaProgramme-2016’ in association with Mangalore City Corporation, MahajanaSabha, Thotta Bengre, Rotary Club, Mangaluru and Shree KshethraDharmasthala Rural development Project on 10th and 11th September 2016 from7:00 am to 12:30 p.m.

Door to door awareness campaign ‘Nature protection my Responsibility’ –2016 (Nanna Swaccha Bengre-Nanna Javabdari -2016) was also organised on10th & 11th September to bring awareness among the people and futureprotection and preservation of Mother Earth.

The inauguration of the extension activity was held at 7:30 am on 10thSeptember 2016. Function began invoking the blessings of the Almighty. Dr.Satish Kumar Shetty, Principal, Besant Women’s College welcomed thegathering and informed the students about the importance of such socialresponsibility and community service programmes. He requested theco-operation of all in making the cleanliness drive a successful venture.

The programme was inaugurated by Shri. J.R Lobo, M.L.A President, MangaloreCity South Constituency, Backward Class and minority Welfare committee. Inhis inaugural speech he stressed the importance of organising suchprogrammes for the benefit of common man and appreciated the young studentswho came forward in large numbers to participate in the cleanliness drive.

Smt Kavitha Sanil, President, Public Health Education and Social JusticeCommittee spoke about the valuable services rendered by Mangalore CityCorporation in the door to door collection of garbage and effective solidwaste management to protect the society from the spread of malaria andDengue for the last few years. She ensured the same services to becontinued in future too in Mangalore City. Shri. Mohammed Nazir,Commissioner, City Corporation ensured effective co-operation in all thefuture endeavours taken up by Besant women’s College.

Mrs Meera K Karkera, the Local corporator expressed satisfaction on themove taken by institutions in jointly organising such programmes for thebenefit of the community. Shri Manjayya Shetty, Health Officer, MangaloreCity Corporation and Yathish Baikampady, Rotary Club, Mangalore werepresent on the occasion.

Shri Chethan Bengre, President, Mahajana Sabha, in his speech requested theneed of more support from the Mangalore City Corporation and otherorganisations in improving the infrastructure, constructing an open airauditorium and providing more toilet facilities for the people of Bengre.

Shri Harinath M, Mayor , Mangalore City Corporation in his presidentialaddress ensured complete co-operation to the institutions involved in theprogramme and appreciated the initiative taken by Besant Women’s Collegefor such a great social responsibility and community service. Shri KudupiJagadish Shenoy. President, WNES, in his speech expressed the need ofencouraging Tourism at Bengre Region to attract foreigners and othervisitors which will enhance the economic status of the local people andhelps in more developmental plans in the region.

Dr Meenakshi Ramachandran, Co-ordinator of the programme gave the vote ofThanks. Prof Shirly Rani, the Co-ordinator of the Cell was also present inthe occasion. Mrs Swaroop Shetty, President, Besant Alumni Association,Prof . Preetha Bhandary and Prof Meera Edna Coelho, IQAC Co-ordinators ofBWC, Members of Shree Kshethra Dharmasthala Rural Development project, Mr.Srinidhi, health inspector MCC, the faculty members, Prof Sayyed Kahder,Student Welfare Officer, members of College Union ,Association Convenors,Prof Jayashree and Mrs Ravi Prabha NSS Programme officers, Students of NSS,Rangering Unit, Environment Club, Red-cross unit and Mentors and Tutors ofdifferent classes, students of Besant women’s College and local people ofBengre were also present among the audience on the occasion. Under thesupervision of Faculty members and SKDRDP members students carried out thefield work programme. The Corporation workers team also joined in thecleanliness drive.

The local news papers and Television Channels reported in detail about theSwacchatha Andolana programme to bring public awareness. Such initiativestaken up by Besant Women’s College will be a model for other institutionsto come forward to serve the society. The programme was quite remarkable inthe history of Besant Women’s College.

On the second day of Swaccha Mangaluru (Bengre region) SwaachathaAndolana-2016, 11th September 2016 the programme commenced at 7am with thecleanliness drive. Students of Besant women’s College formed teams withmembers of SKDRDP, MCC and members of Mahajana Sabha and carried out theenvironment cleanliness drive.

The formal Valedictory function commenced at 9.30 a.m. Dr. Satish KumarShetty, Principal, Besant Women’s College welcomed the gathering. Chiefguest Shri Shashidhar Hegde, Ex-Mayor expressed his great joy in attendingthe Swacchatha Andolana programme organised by Besant Women’s Collegebecause he was the guest on several occasions for socially relevantprogrammes organised by the Institution and he wished success to theOrganisations for conducting the social responsibility programme.

Smt. Roopa D Bengera, Opposition party leader addressed the gathering andin her speech she informed the local people to co-operate in maintainingcleanliness of their own surroundings by depositing waste in the waste binsprovided and segregating the waste which helps in re-cycling.

Shri Chethan Bengera expressed his appreciation for the support given bythe Management, faculty and students for the Swacchatha Andolanaprogramme.Shri Devananda Pai in his presidential address acknowledged thework done by the students and assured support in all future endeavours ofthe institution. He also participated in the cleanliness drive.

Shri Hemachandra Salian Vice President, Shri Shiva, Secretary, MahajanaSabha, Bengre, Shri Manjayya Shetty ,Health officer ,Mangalore CityCorporation, Shri Sadashiva Shetty, Vice President PTA Besant women’sCollege, Associate Prof Shirly Rani and Dr. Meenakshi. K, Co-ordinators ofthe Extension and Outreach activity, Ms Gayathri, Member Extension andOutreach activity Cell , Besant Women’s College were present on theoccasion.

The programme was attended by all the members of the organisations and thetwo days programme concluded with Vote of thanks proposed by Ms Shobhitha,member Extension and Outreach activity Cell, Besant Women’s College. Afterthe valedictory programme students continued the cleanliness programme andunder the supervision of Faculty members and SKDRDP members deposited thewaste in the collection vehicles suggested by the Mangalore Citycorporation. The programme was reported by the local newspapers and localTelevision channels with the main objective of bringing awareness among thepublic.
