Certificate Course In Pathological Techniques 2022-23 : Department of PG Studies in Food Science & Nutrition

A pre –assesment form was given to students and based on their interest in the learning more about the pathological techniques, the Department of PG studies in Food Science and Nutrition, in collaboration with the Accu labs, Valencia, Mangalore provided the M.Sc. students with a 42-hour certificate course in pathological techniques. The certificate course comprised 12 hours of theory & 30 hours of practical under Mr. Rajesh Lobo, Head of Operations, and Ms. Nireeksha V, Assistant Professor, M.Sc. FSN, Besant Women’s College, Mangalore.

OBJECTIVE:

  • To enhance the knowledge in pathological techniques.
  • To provide hands on training in the pathological training.
  • To interpret the pathological results in assessing the diseases.

OUTCOME:

⮚ Knowledge of pathological techniques used at laboratory levels for diagnosis of disease conditions

⮚ Hands-on training of the laboratory techniques

⮚ Basic understanding of pathological reports in the assessment of the disease.

REPORT :

The inauguration of the certificate course was done on the 16th of April 2022 and the inaugural ceremony was graced by the correspondent of Besant Women’s College, Dr. Manjula KT as the guest of honor and Mr. Martin, Acculabs. The students were given a brief ideology on the objective, outcome, benefits and syllabus of the certificate course.

The students visited the Accu labs in Valencia, where they were in details demonstrated on various parameters of pathology. The students were taught on the details to be collected during

the process of patient data entry. They were even educated regarding different techniques that are generally used in the laboratory like ESR, use of Medonic machine for complete blood count, use of the Maghumi 600 for the immunological assays, strip test for urine analysis and so on. The students were even demonstrated the process of blood sample collection and the precautions to be followed during the sample collection. The students were in brief explained about various colour coding system of the vacutainers and were taught on how to store the blood sample in the vacutainers until further use. The students were even demonstrated on few of the qualitative blood analysis done at the laboratory.

With respect to the theory part of the course the students were taught on the role and responsibilities of the medical lab technologist, study of vacutainers, specimen collection and handling, pathological tests and interpretation of pathological reports by Ms. Nireeksha V.

The assessment of the students pertaining to the course was done in the form of assignments, report writing and examination which on the whole carried 100 marks. The students were graded based on their performance in all these aspects. A post assessment form was given to the students to obtain their feedback regarding the course and it was seen the students found the course very informative and useful for their academic purpose in terms of clinical nutrition.

The valedictory ceremony was held on 10th of February 2023, the chief guest of the ceremony was the correspondent of Besant Women’s College, Dr. Manjula KT as the guest of honor and Mr. Martin, Acculabs and was presided by the Principal Dr. Sathish Kumar Shetty P. The report of the course was read out by the lecturer-in charge Ms. Nireeksha V .The students were asked to give their valuable feedback on the course and certificates were distributed to them.
