Special lecture on Capital Market : Department of Commerce and Business Administration

The department of Commerce and Business Administration of Besant Women’s College in Association with Bombay Stock Exchange organized a Special Lecture on Capital Market for all the B.COM and BBA students. The programme was co-ordinated by the Dean and HOD of Commerce and Business Administration, Prof. S Syed Kahdar and Miss Ashwini Prabhu, Staff Convenor- Association Of Commerce and Business Administration and student convenor Ms Shrujini. Dr. Praveen Kumar K, Principal was also present for the session. About 95 students had participated in the session. The session was held on 25 October 2023 in the college AV room at 2.45 p.m. The resource person for the programme was Mr Chethan Kumar, LOTUS KNOWLWEALTH- MUMBAI

The lecture covered crucial topics such as do's and don'ts for investors, the importance of accessing SEBI's website for obtaining a demat account, and vigilance against fraudulent investment schemes. Additionally, the lecture emphasized the significance of maintaining personal financial security by not sharing sensitive information. Mr. Kumar also highlighted the rights and obligations of investors, focusing on the KYC process and mechanisms available for addressing grievances. He underscored the penalties associated with non-compliance by stockholding companies and encouraged attendees to be vigilant and proactive in reporting any irregularities. Furthermore, the lecture introduced students to the world of derivatives, including futures and options, and emphasized the importance of utilizing the BSE website for accessing critical market information.

Faculties of Commerce and Business Administration Professor Jayashree, Nayana, Shobhitha , Vidya, Reshma, Chanchalakshi and Deekshitha were also present for the session.

Objectives:

  • To enhance the understanding of capital markets among B.Com and BBA students.
  • To provide practical insights and knowledge about investment do's and don'ts.
  • To create awareness about the regulatory framework and investor protection measures.

Outcomes:

  • Increased awareness among students about the functioning and importance of capital markets.
  • Improved knowledge on the steps and precautions required for safe and informed investments.
  • Familiarity with the role of SEBI and its website for obtaining a demat account.
  • Heightened vigilance against fraudulent practices, particularly fake stock booking companies and unsolicited investment solicitations.
  • Understanding of the significance of legal documents in the investment process.
  • Emphasis on safeguarding personal financial information by not sharing user IDs and passwords.
  • Clear understanding of the rights and obligations of investors, including the KYC process.
  • Awareness of mechanisms for addressing investor grievances.
  • Knowledge of penalties associated with non-compliance by stockholding companies and avenues for filing complaints. Introduction to derivatives, including futures and options, as well as the importance of the BSE website for market information.

The event was well received by the students, who found the information provided to be valuable and relevant to their academic pursuits. The insights gained from this lecture are expected to enhance the students' comprehension of capital markets and equip them with practical knowledge for making informed investment decisions in the future.
