Industrial visit to CAMPCO and BINDU Industry, Puttur, followed by a visit to Balavana, the memorial of Dr. Kota Shivaram Karanth: Department of Commerce and Business Administration
The Department of Commerce and Business Administration organized an Industrial visit to CAMPCO and BINDU Industry, Puttur, followed by a visit to Balavana, the memorial of Dr. Kota Shivaram Karanth, 25th October 2025. The visit aimed to provide students with practical exposure to industrial operations, management practices, and production processes. A total of 41 students from B.Com second Year, accompanied by two faculty members Mrs Reshma and Mrs Nayana, participated in the visit.
Visit to CAMPCO
The first visit was to CAMPCO (Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Co-operative Ltd.), a reputed cooperative organization known for its contribution to the arecanut and cocoa sectors. The company officials welcomed the students and gave a detailed presentation on the establishment, objectives, and operations of CAMPCO.
Students were taken on a guided tour of the processing units, where they observed various stages such as cleaning, grading, roasting, and packaging of cocoa and arecanut products. The staff also explained the cooperative principles under which CAMPCO operates, highlighting how farmers benefit from collective marketing and fair pricing. This visit enabled students to understand the functioning of cooperative societies and their significant role in the rural economy.
Visit to Bindu Industry
The second visit was to Bindu Industry, a well-known beverage manufacturing unit in Puttur. The factory is engaged in the production of a variety of soft drinks, fruit juices, and flavored beverages. Upon arrival, the students were warmly received by the factory staff and were given an overview of the company’s history, product range, and production process.
During the factory tour, students observed the different stages of beverage production, including water purification, mixing of ingredients, carbonation, bottling, labeling, and packaging. The staff demonstrated how strict hygiene and quality control standards are maintained throughout the process to ensure the safety and freshness of the products.
A special highlight of the visit was the detailed explanation about the production of small bottles of Jeera drink, which is one of Bindu’s most popular products. The representatives explained the unique flavoring process, the proportion of ingredients used, and the packaging techniques that maintain its quality and shelf life. Students learned about the market demand for such small packaged beverages and how product diversification helps the company reach different consumer segments.
In addition, the students were briefed about the tetra pack juice production unit. They were shown how fruit juices are processed, sterilized, and packed in tetra packs to preserve their natural taste and nutritional value without the need for refrigeration. The use of advanced packaging technology and automation impressed the students, giving them a deeper understanding of modern manufacturing and packaging systems.
The visit to Bindu Industry provided valuable insights into production management, marketing strategies, machinery operation, and safety standards, helping students relate their classroom learning to industrial practices.
Visit to Balavana – Memorial of Dr. Shivaram Karanth
After the industrial visits, the students proceeded to Balavana, the residence and memorial of the great Kannada writer, environmentalist, and Jnanpith awardee Dr. Kota Shivaram Karanth. The students had the opportunity to explore the museum that houses Dr. Karanth’s personal belongings, manuscripts, and photographs depicting his vast contributions to literature, theater, and environmental conservation. The visit inspired students to appreciate his legacy and his immense role in shaping Karnataka’s cultural identity.
Conclusion
The industrial visit to CAMPCO, Bindu Industry, and Balavana was an enriching and educational experience for all the students. It provided practical exposure to industrial operations, cooperative functioning, and modern manufacturing processes, along with a cultural insight into the life of a great personality. The students returned to the college by 5:40 p.m., filled with knowledge, inspiration, and memorable experiences that will greatly support their academic and professional growth.
