Training Programme on Importance of Cashew Apple and its Value Addition for Nutritional Security : Department of Home Science
The ICAR-Directorate of Cashew Research, Puttur, in collaboration with the Food Chain Organisation, organized a one-day training programme on the importance of cashew apple and its value addition for nutritional security. The event was specifically designed for the home science students of Besant Women’s College, Mangalore.
Objective:
The primary goal of the training was to create awareness among the participants about the nutritional significance of cashew apple, a tropical fruit rich in dietary fiber, phytonutrients, minerals, and vitamin C, yet largely underutilized. Additionally, the programme aimed to explore the potential of value addition to cashew apple products for enhancing nutritional security.
Sessions and Activities:
The students were provided with comprehensive training, delivered by Dr. Jyoti N Nishad , the key speaker. Dr. Nishad’s session focused on the various nutritional benefits of cashew apple and its potential in food processing industries.
Dr. Ashwathy Chandrakumar coordinated the event and offered insights into the Cashew Museum. A special visit was arranged to the museum and the food technology laboratory, where students were introduced to various food processing techniques and equipment used in value addition.
The programme was led under the guidance of Dr. J. Dinakara Adiga, Director of the ICAR-Directorate of Cashew Research, who emphasized the importance of utilizing the cashew apple to its fullest potential for addressing nutritional gaps in society.
Participants
A total of 29 home science students from Besant Women’s College attended the programme. The participants expressed their gratitude for the hands-on learning experience and exposure to practical aspects of food processing.
Dr.Saurish Hegde and Mr.Yathish, co ordinator of Food chain campaign which is currently working in Dakshina Kannada to promote local farmers and employment arranged the programme.
Ms.Prithvi.M, Faculty from the Department of Home Science, Besant Womens’ College, Mangalore accompanied the students.
Conclusion
The training programme was a significant step towards educating young students on the untapped potential of cashew apple and its role in improving nutritional security. The event successfully bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, offering valuable insights into the food processing industry.
