Study tour : Dept. Of P.G. Studies in Commerce

A Study tour was conducted for M.Com students (50 students and 3 staff members) from 23rd February - 27th February 2019 which covered the places of Munnar- Ernakulam; tourist spots such as Matupatty Dam, Echo point, Chottanikara Bhagavathi temple, Kuruva Island, Port Cochin, Mattancherry, Chinese fish net, Cochin- Marine drive, Lulu Mall.

Three industries were visited during the Tour:

  • Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Company Private Ltd., Madupatty

The first step in the process is plucking, fresh tea leaves are plucked which includes a bud at the extreme end and two young leaves. The next process is sorting where leaves of different sizes are grouped together. Next step is withering which reduces the moisture content in them by drying them up by passing air on them gently. The next step is disruption and is usually done by kneading, crushing, tearing and rolling the withered tea leaves. Next step in the tea leave processing process is oxidation which decides the colour, strength and taste of the tea. The leaves are now ready for the final step of drying. The oxidised leaves are further dried by methods like baking, air drying to further reduce the moisture content in them before they are ready to be packed and shipped out.
