Onam Pookalam Competition: Student Union

The Onam Pookalam competition, organized by the Student Union of Besant Women’s College, was held on 18th September 2024 from 2:30 PM onwards. Under the leadership of Union Advisor, Professor Ranjini, and her dedicated team, the event celebrated the rich cultural tradition of Onam with great enthusiasm.

Participants:

Eight teams from BA, BCom, BBA, BCA, BSc General, and BSc Home Science participated in the competition. Each team displayed remarkable creativity and teamwork while designing their Pookalams, which reflected the essence of the festival—prosperity, joy, and unity.

Theme & Preparation:

The Pookalams were crafted using a variety of colorful flower petals, showcasing intricate designs and patterns that beautifully represented the cultural significance of Onam.

Judging Panel:

The competition was judged by Professor Jnaneshwari from the Kannada Department and Professor Reshma Yathish from the Commerce Department, both respected faculty members of Besant Women’s College. Their evaluations were based on key criteria such as creativity, color harmony, design intricacy, and cultural relevance. Their role in the event highlighted the expertise and support of the college’s own faculty members.

Judgment Criteria:

1. Creativity – Originality and uniqueness of the designs.

2. Color Usage – Effective use and combination of flower petal colors.

3. Design Complexity – The intricacy and balance of the patterns.

4. Cultural Reflection – Representation of the spirit and traditions of Onam.

Event Management:

The Student Union, led by Professor Ranjini, ensured that the event was seamlessly organized. Their efforts in managing the logistics, from flower arrangements to time management, played a key role in making the competition a success.
