- To provide the students valuable insights into the world of coffee.

- The students learnt about every single aspect of the entire coffee-making process from farm to table.
DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY
The Department of P.G Studies in Food Science and Nutrition organized an industrial visit for the M.Sc. students ( 16 in no) accompanied by 2 teaching faculty on 11th January 2024 to Mercara Gold Estate situated at, Coorg.
Sun Blessed Coffee Private Limited owns a beautiful little plantation called Mercara Gold Estate, nestled amidst lush greenery in the home of the finest coffee-growing region of India - Coorg (Kodagu). Whilst coffee was growing there since the 1960s, they began a process of transformation by organizing it into a well-laid-out farm & introduced farm processes & practices that are “best in class” for an optimum yield & fine quality produce of Arabica, Robusta & Liberica coffees after acquiring it in 1998. In addition to growing coffee beans a wide array of aromatic spices and fruits are also grown in the estate. The knowledgeable Mr. Ravi enlightened the students on various aspects of cultivation process such as soil conditions necessary for cultivation of coffee beans, effects of local climate, time of harvest etc. He gave the students exposure to state-of-the-art coffee processing which includes sorting, drying, roasting, and packaging facility The students also had a glimpse of different varieties and forms of coffee beans and coffee powder. The students also visited the World Coffee Museum which gave an unique insight into coffee cultures across the globe.
The tour at Mercara Gold Estate was an educational and enriching experience.
