Green Initiative
The environment is depleting at a very fast rate. The loss of greenery is the main cause of global warming. The restoration of greenery has to be done on a war footing. Keeping this in view the Department of Secretarial Practice of Besant Women’s College took this step of promoting greenery in and around Mangalore. Usually we have “Vanamahotsava”, during the beginning of monsoon, where plants are planted on a day or a week and then forgotten about it. In the next 3 months the plants dry off because no one takes care of these newly planted tree-plants. To overcome this, department of SP came out with a unique plan “Namma Mane Namma Mara” ( ). Under the Scheme a Corporate organisation will sponsor the saplings under “Corporate Social Responsibility” (CSR) and some houses will be selected in a particular locality within the City. Saplings will be given to the owner of the house with the advice that the plants should be looked after well and later when the trees grow they will bear fruits which can be used by the dwellers of the house and neighbours.
The programme was held on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Urwa Market, Mangaluru. The dignitaries on the occasion were Sri J. R. Lobo, MLA, Mangalore South, Mr. Radhakrishna, Corporator, and Mr. Madhava Ullal, Environmentalist.
The Correspondent of the College, Sri Devanand Pai K. presided over the function. The Principal Dr. Sathish Kumar Shetty was the first person to dig a hole to plant the tree given by Shri J.R. Lobo during the inauguration. He said that such programmes inculcate good habits and makes the young generation love the environment. The staff members and the students were present on the occasion. While Dr. Shetty welcomed the gathering, Prof. Hemalatha proposed the vote of thanks.
