Debate Competition: Department of Commerce and Business Administration
Introduction
The Department of Commerce and Business Administration of Besant Women’s College organized a Debate Competition on September 25, 2024. The event was held to encourage students to develop critical thinking, refine their public speaking abilities, and enhance their capacity to present and defend their ideas coherently and effectively.
Event Details
The event commenced at 1:30 PM in M.Com Auditorium with a welcome address by the Student Coordinator, Ms. Kiran. Seven teams representing different classes participated in the competition, each team showcasing their debating skills on a designated topic. The event provided a platform for students to express diverse viewpoints, engaging the audience in thought-provoking discussions.
Judging Panel
The judging panel comprised two distinguished faculty members:
- Mr. Girish Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of English.
- Ms. Nireeksha V, Assistant Professor in PG Studies, FSN.
The judges evaluated participants based on several key criteria, including clarity of thought, strength of arguments, rebuttal abilities, and overall presentation skills. Their assessments were pivotal in ensuring a fair and enriching competition.
Guest Address:
During the event, the guest of honor addressed the participants, emphasizing the value of debate in cultivating analytical thinking, boosting confidence, and fostering intellectual growth. The address highlighted the importance of viewing differing opinions as opportunities for learning and development, encouraging students to continue honing their communication skills through such platforms.
Competition Format
The competition format allowed participants to present arguments both for and against the topic. Following the main debate, a lively question-and-answer session was held, during which the audience engaged with the debaters. This interactive segment allowed participants to demonstrate their quick thinking and adaptability, further enhancing the overall experience.
Conclusion
The Debate Competition was a resounding success, fostering an engaging and competitive atmosphere that inspired students to sharpen their public speaking and argumentation skills. Feedback from both participants and attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing appreciation for the learning experience it provided.
