Guest Lecture: Topic: A talk on Cyber Security; Resource Person: Mohammed sheik Nihal
Description of the Programme: The resource person spoke on the importance of Cybersecurity.
He said , “Cybersecurity is crucial in today’s digital age as it protects sensitive information, prevents cyber-attacks, and maintains the integrity of systems. It is essential for individuals, businesses, and governments to prioritize cybersecurity to safeguard data and ensure the smooth functioning of digital operations1. He emphasized on the Do’s and Don’ts of Cyber Security. He stressed on using Strong Passwords. He asked the students to create complex passwords using a mix of letters, numbers, and special characters. He also mentioned to enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) to add an extra layer of security to your accounts, Keep Software Updated and, Be Cautious with Emails. He said, “Verify the sender before clicking on links or downloading attachments”.
On Don’ts he said, “Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Sensitive Transactions. Don’t Share Personal Information: Be cautious about sharing personal details online. Avoid Using the Same Password: Use different passwords for different accounts.
He emphasized on the fact, why girls and women should be having the awareness on the Cybersecurity. He said, “Girls and women are underrepresented in the cybersecurity field, yet their perspectives are crucial for addressing diverse security challenges. Knowledge of cybersecurity empowers girls to protect themselves online, understand the value of their data, and contribute to a more inclusive and secure digital environment”.
He made clear some of the terminologies used in Cybersecurity. Some of the terminologies, the resource person mentioned are listed below:
Phishing: A method used by cybercriminals to trick individuals into providing sensitive information by pretending to be a trustworthy entity.
Malware: Malicious software designed to harm, exploit, or otherwise compromise a computer system.
Firewall: A network security device that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules.
Encryption: The process of converting data into a code to prevent unauthorized access.
The resource person showed the method of identifying the fake and real URLs. He concluded his talk by asking the audience to be safe while browsing the internet for information. He asked the students to follow the guidelines provided and understand the importance of cybersecurity; by doing this, the individuals can better protect themselves and contribute to a safer Digital World.
The programme was attended by the staff of BCA comprising of Mr. Gopalkrishna A. Raikar, Ms. Naseera S, Ms. Siby M.A, Ms Keerthilaxmi and Ms. Lithika. The technical arrangements were taken care of by Mr. Ravinder Murthy and all the students of BCA.
Programme Outcome: The students learnt about the different cybercrimes and the different ways to protect themselves on the internet. The programme was much appreciated for the points covered in the talk on Cybersecurity.
